Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an immune-mediated inflammatory disease in which your immune system attacks healthy cells in your body, resulting in inflammation (painful swelling) in the affected areas. RA primarily affects the joints, frequently attacking multiple joints at the same time. The most commonly affected joints by RA are the hands, wrists, and knees. In RA joints, the joint lining becomes inflamed, causing joint tissue damage. This tissue damage can cause long-term or chronic pain, unsteadiness (lack of balance), and deformity (misshapenness). Other tissues and organs, such as the lungs, heart, and eyes, can be affected by RA.
